High cholesterol: What is cholesterol, Causes, symbols, foods treatment and more.

In this article, at the end you are going to familiarise yourself with role of cholesterol in our bodies. It’s signs/symptoms, prevention measures and treatment on therapy.

What is cholesterol?

Found in the human being cells, they are fatty waxy like coated substances. The substance is insoluble meaning, it doesn’t mix with blood being that blood is water-based. This substance I mean cholesterol is very essential for digestion. It also plays part in the existence of hormones and vitamins D development. Despite your body manufacturing cholesterol for its use, cholesterol is also sourced from  animal food like cheese, meet and egg yolks.

Atherosclerosis can be caused by ingesting/taking too much cholesterol into your body system. Actually atherosclerosis is a process by which arteries walls gets manifested with fats substances, when cholesterol combines with other substances to form plaque.  This is where your coronary arteries becomes narrowed or even blocked, stopping free blood circulation and oxidation. This leads to coronary disease caused by the building up of plaque on the walls of the arteries.

Cholesterol comes into two formations; the “bad” cholesterol also known as Low-Density-Lipoproteins (LDL) form, and  the “Good” cholesterol also known as High-Density-Lipoproteins (HDL) grouped form of substances.

High cholesterol is caused by unhealthy eating bad habit/attitude like:

1. Consuming bad fats.

Saturated fat found in processed foods, deep fried foods, chocolate, dairy products and in some meats. Feeding on “Trans fat” which are fats found in some processed food and some fried foods. Over feeding and consumption of these fats with too much/lots of sitting and lack of physical exercise, will either lower your body good cholesterol (HDL), or raise your bad cholesterol (LDL).

2. Smoking.

For people who smoke, their good cholesterol (HDL) is lowered and their LDL (bad cholesterol) raised most. But this mostly affects women who smoke more than men who smoke.

3. Ancestry inborn character or genetics.

Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is caused as a result of genetic. Also certain medication therapy may result into higher cholesterol levels.

Cholesterol levels can be managed by reducing fats intake in the diet.

Cholesterol inhibiting foods.

Some oily fish like salmon if eaten regularly, has the power to minimize risks that come with cholesterol.
Harvard recent health report shows foods that actively lowers cholesterol.

-Whole grains.
-Beans.
-Barley.
-Oats.
-Soy-based foods.
-Fibre rich foods.
-Fruits mainly (citrus, strawberries, grapes, and apples).
-Egg plant
-Sunflower (vegetable oil)
-Okra
-Fatty fish (sardines, tuna, and salmon).
Adding any of these foods to your diet, can regulate, checking your cholesterol levels.

Bad cholesterol foods established by the Same report includes:

– hydrogenated oils.
– baked goods.
– margarine.
– full-fat dairy.
– red meat.

What raises high cholesterol risks?

High cholesterol risks can be raised through:

1. Age.
The cholesterol levels affects age due to malfunction of some body tissues as aging is acquired. However, this can also affect young people; children and teens.

2. Heredity.
Acquired due the type of life and character of your family.

3. Uncontrolled feeding behaviour/attitude.
Not considering good diet measures can lead to high cholesterol.

4. Race.
The percentage of African Americans compared to whites is higher on cholesterol levels.

5. Weight.
It’s very essential and important to monitor your weight. If not well managed, it can yield bad fruits on your health status.

High cholesterol can erupt into numerous health issues/problems.

Blood clot can erupt due to the breaking down of the large deposits of plaque. This sometime might block blood flow and free circulation of blood in the coronary artery. On the case of the oxygen-rich blood being blocked to rich heart muscle, it can lead to heart attack or too much pain in the chest (angina).
Other arteries in your body including those ones that circulates oxygen-rich blood to your limbs and brain, can be affected too by the building up of plaque. If this becomes enormous, it can lead to problems such as stroke, peripheral arterial and carotid artery disease.

How to lower and deal with your cholesterol?

Since lifestyle dictates your health, eating heart health foods by encouraging a healthy-heart-eating plan, will lower your cholesterol.
Managing your weight throughout by engaging in physical activities too can lower your cholesterol.
However, under your doctor’s prescription, you can use certain types of drugs to lower cholesterol like statins. But don’t forget to continue with your lifestyle changes while using medicines.
A treatment called lipoprotein apheresis is induced or carried out on some patients with familial hypercholesterolemia (FH). In this process, LDL cholesterol is removed from the blood by the use of filtering machine then the blood returned back.
